Do you have a small nook or alcove in your home that you look at often but you’re not sure what to do with the space? We have a small nook above our stairs. We’ve struggled what to do with the space for the last 5 years.
Recently I was lucky enough to harvest a Montana bull elk. We had the head European mounted but we weren’t sure where to display it. After measuring, it turned out the nook above the stairs would be the perfect spot to hang the mount. However, as you can see from the picture below, the contrast of the elk skull and the wall was not enough to make it stand out.
After completing our fireplace makeover we decided to take the left-over wood and install it on the back wall of the nook. We figured it would make the space more aesthetically pleasing but it would also provide the contrast we desired, to make the elk head stand out more.
So, I pulled out the miter saw again which still had the 60 tooth blade installed on it and I cut the wood to length. I then applied liquid nails to the back of each piece and secured in place with my air-nailer, using 16-gauge 2″ nails.
The project took me about 2 hours from start to finish. As you can see from the pictures below, the reclaimed wood really changes the space and gives the elk head the contrast we were looking for. Stay tuned for our next project!
